Alex Nabiev is a Russian pro wrestler, most notable he is a Death Match/Hardcore wrestler.

First of all, please tell us a little about yourself including how long you've been wrestling, what companies you've worked in and one's that you currently work in and some of your career highlights.

I started training in 2015 and I was a referee. My debut was in 2016. I trained in Gorky City Wrestling and currently I'm in GCW. Also I had matches in VWA and EFS. I was a Hardcore Champion in GCW, I won a Hardcore Gauntlet in GCW and participated in the first Thai Pei Death Match in Eastern Europe. I was in factions called "Swarm" and "Family".

Where did you train to become a wrestler?

First Wrestlers in Gorky City Wrestling trained me and I trained myself and some of new guys who came to our promotion.

For those unaware who you are, how would you describe your style and character?

In the ring I'm the same as in life. Just Russian Jackass who does violence. My style is Hardcore.

What would you consider the hardest part about being a professional athlete?

I think it's flights/transfers and injuries.

Who are your favourite, and who would be your dream opponents, to face?  And do you think you could beat them in their prime?

I have a lot of favourite wrestlers. Most of all its wrestlers from CZW, IWA-MS, IWA-DS, Game Changer Wrestling, Milestone Wrestling etc. I want to face Matt Tremont, Spidar Bodroow, Necro Butcher, Mad Man Pondo, Corporal Robinson, Ian Rotten, John Zandig, Colt 45, Terry Huston, actually a lot of wrestlers lol.

You're known as a death match / hardcore wrestler.  Why death match wrestling?  Why not a normal family friendly type show?

In my childhood I heard about WWE of course, but for the first time when I saw Pro Wrestling it was on the TV: Russian wrestling promotion НФР. And I became a big fan of wrestling and especially hardcore matches. I liked when the wrestlers bloodied, used chairs and all that stuff. In the first match that I saw, one of the participants was with a broken arm, and the second one had a busted open forehead, it shocked me and made an impression on me. I thought that these two competitors in the ring are not humans, they are beasts. But everything changed when, in the Russian social network, I accidentally saw a  highlights with matches from CZW and IWA-MS, that was something, I didn't understand what it was, some kind of bloodbath, Illegal matches.  Then I found out what kind of style it was and realised that hardcore in Russia is shit and it needs to be changed. Now I have an opportunity to make a childhood dream comes true.

How does it feel knowing there's people out there who say you're delusional or stupid for doing such a thing?

That's funny and cool. I don't give a shit about what people say or think. I live in regular Town Nizniy Novgorod in some old soviet neighbourhood and I have anarchy tattoo on my head and bleached hair. People from my hood and town most of all hates me lol.

What would you say to those people who say death match wrestling is “fucking stupid” and “only a redneck/untrained wrestler would do it”, despite there being so many talented technical/grapple wrestlers that have done death matches?

I will say nothing, cuz everybody has the right to a personal opinion.

How do you prepare for such matches as opposed to a standard match?

I buy lightubes and Barbed Wire :-D.

Why do it? Why do death match wrestlers subject themselves to the pain, blood and scars?

Honestly I don't know. I think about it all the time and don't know the answer.   I look at the Jun Kasai's back or Ciclop's back and envy. I just love it.

What is your favourite and least favourite death match/hardcore stipulation/match types?

Favourite: House of Horrors, No Rope Barbed Wire, Thai Pei, Barefoot.
Least favourite maybe: Death from above

Could you tell us the worst decision you ever made in a match?

Can't remember. Maybe match in the rain.

Has there ever been a point in a match where you’ve said to yourself “fuck it, I’m not doing this shit”?

Not yet.

What was the craziest spot you’ve done?

By now I think it's Uranagi on a lighttube and barbed-wire table from the apron and when Alexey stubbed my head with a boxcutter (When I touch my forehead, something is twitching at the top of my head, probably wrongly healed).

What is the most unique weapon you’ve seen or used in a match?

I used roller with a thumbtacks and I have this.

From a fan: What's the most fucked up thing you would do that wouldn’t end your career?

In future I wanna spot from the roof.

If you could challenge any “PG wrestler” to a death match, who would it be?

John Cena, Hulk Hogan.

From a fan: Can you tell us if there has ever been a point where you got so badly hurt you thought your career was over, or potentially could be over?

My career just started. A couple of times I had concussions after a big chair shot and when I hit the back of the head. I had some troubles but everything's OK now.

From a fan: If you had the chance to go back in time, but know the impact death match wrestling would take on your body, would you still do it?

Any other dates/future appearances of yourself that you'd like to plug?

July 14 - Slavonic Violence. First Death match Tournament in Eastern Europe.

Anything else you'd like to add / give thanks to anyone / shout out to any companies / people?

I wanna say thanks to you for that interview and thanks to all people who is interested of what I am doing. Shout out to IWA-DS, IWA-MS, Game Changer Wrestling and CZW and ALL Death Match wrestlers and fans in a whole world!

Please include any links to social media / online store / sponsors you wish for us to include in the interview.
